Lakehead University - State Research University, has campuses in two cities in the province of Ontario - Thunder Bay (main campus) and Orilla. It was founded in 1946 initially as the Lakehead Technical Institute, and then in 1965 received university status. The university offers bachelor's and master's programs; in 2013 was opened the Faculty of Law; there is a business faculty, the only one in Northern Ontario who has AACSB accreditation.

Lakehead focused on research: the university has a one-of-a-kind DNA research laboratory, a bio-processing research institute, a center of excellence in sustainable mining, etc. In total, about 8,000 students study at 2 campuses, which is not so much for a state university, which means that the interaction of the professor with each student is quite high.
